The Power of a Law School Degree

Someone who paid for law school has come up with an interpretation that makes me afraid:

In a text sent at 9:41 P.M., he told Yang, “I was afraid he might have hidden another webcam so I also shut down and turned off the power strip.” Prosecutors, pursuing a bias charge, have claimed that “afraid,” in this context, constitutes evidence of fear.

As opposed to the contexts in which “afraid” constitutes evidence of hilarity.
